Here are some more photos of things that I like to make. I made this blanket yesterday. I bought the fabric a while back before the last baby shower I attended, when I was trying to pick out the right color scheme for my friend's blanket. It's become kind of a standard shower gift. They're really easy to make, and picking out the colors is fun! Anyway, I made this one for myself, probably for my (older) daughter, since we didn't know that the new one is more-than-likely a girl when I picked out the fabric. I need to experiment making one for a boy, and I have an idea and a baby boy in mind, I just need to do it! Most of the mothers I know who have had babies recently have had girls, though!
This is mine (for my daughter). I'll have to look around to find new colors for the new baby! She likes to wrap herself up in it. The backing is polar fleece, very cuddly. It's a play quilt in summer, or a cozy quilt for winter!
Here's the first I made:
Green and pink:Peach!

Those are so cool! eBay!! ;)
I love them all but the peach is my favorite!

The peach just might be my favorite, too. It was a little tougher to coordinate with the peach. I was so surprised to find polar fleece that matched so perfectly, and the binding was a tough call. The dominant print has deep red cherries, so I almost used a coordinating deep red for the binding (I considered a sage green, too). I even bought both yellow and deep red binding to take home & think about. Yellow won, as you can see! Anyway, I'm sure that's more info than anyone needed!! Thanks for the compliments! They probably cost too much to make to make eBay worthwhile, but thanks for the suggestion! ;)
Those are such nice gifts. I always love homemade gifts; they're so much more special.
Those are very cute. I tend toward the overly intricate when it comes to quilting. Lots of little tiny pieces of fabric, lots of different prints. I think the quilt I made for my daughter has at least a dozen different prints. Which may be why I can't work myself up to begin a quilt for the new baby.
What are the dimensions of these blankies? Do you use any filling or do you stitch the fleece right to the front fabric? I might be getting an inspiration for a trek down to the fabric bins in the basement. My sister-in-law gave me a whole bunch of fleece last year and I am such a fabric hoarder I've got enough for several full-sized quilts. These blankies look simple enough I may be able to whip one out without a trip to the store.
Oh yeah, they're easy. It's basically a Simplicity baby pattern, actually, though I figured out that the pattern piece for the backing isn't the right size for the front once it is pieced. I just pin it directly to the fleece & cut around. And of course, all except the first one I made use pre-packaged binding (yay!). So it's just nine 13 x 13 squares sewn together. Each 2 squares take 1/2 yard (with a lot of waste).
I don't consider myself a quilter AT ALL. In fact, the diaper bag purse in my last sewing post was a quilter's pattern, and it was like I was reading a different language. I don't know if I will venture any further into quilting, but I sure do appreciate those who do!! :) Oh wait! I have made a blue jean quilt. But that's different. I'll post it so you can see!
Melanie made me remember that last time I was pregnant. I tried sewing something in the beginning and it made me sick & weak & everything else. :P I couldn't even THINK about sewing for the rest of the pregnancy!
I recognize the green one :) Baby Belle has enjoyed playing on it. I think I'll post some of my recent projects on my blog. Not Mommy, Ph.D.--I'm still staying away from that one for a while, but I'm still posting on my family blog.
Oooh I like the blue jean quilt. I've been saving my old jeans and my husband's; but I can't quite decide whether I want to make a quilt out of them or a rag rug. Mind you, I've never made a rag rug before; but I think it might be a cool thing to try. When I get past this first trimester exhaustion.
I think if you've made even one quilt, you can consider yourself a quilter. That said, I don't know if I really consider myself a quilter, especially when I compare myself to people I consider "real quilters". This though I've made 9 quilts (5 of them baby quilts) and hope to someday make more. I don't sew them by hand, though. I do all the piecing on the sewing machine. I only hand stitch the binding. And I don't quilt them, I tie them with embroidery floss, which is much simpler and less time consuming, though probably less durable.
